Butterflies are amazing little insects – (hey, there’s a fact right there? The beautiful butterfly is really an insect!). But, seriously, read on for some little known and pretty interesting facts about these industrious little flutterers.
There are approximately 20,000 species of butterflies in the world, according to the North American Butterfly Association.
Butterflies don’t sip their food with their proboscis; the long, straw like “tongue” serves to absorb the food instead. Instead of tasting with this “tongue,” they actually taste with their feet where their taste sensors are located.
Most butterfly species’ wings are covered with tiny scales, which form brightly colored patterns and are used as “signals” to attract the opposite sex for mating purposes.
During their migration, Monarch butterflies travel up to 100 miles per day! Their wings must be tired!
