In light of the opening of our new bee exhibit, we’re dedicating this post to the delicious product of our bees’ hard work — sweet, delicious, natural honey! Honey is yummy on everything from toast to fresh fruit and even as a way to sweeten homemade salad dressings and sauces. But there are so many other amazing uses for honey! The old adage says, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” but honey is actually a great natural elixir to soothe a sore throat or cough. We’re guessing your little one would be much more likely to enjoy a spoonful of honey instead of cough syrup next time he’s under the weather! Adults can add a few teaspoons of the sticky stuff to warm water or tea with a squeeze of lemon to tackle these same symptoms. A little honey-ginger mixture can also help calm an upset stomach. By combining a teaspoon of honey with two teaspoons of yogurt (not the flavored kind!) and half a banana, mashed, you can create a soothing facial mask that serves to nourish the skin by adding vitamins, and even reduces inflammation and boosts anti-inflammatory elements in the skin. To add shine and strengthen your hair, make a hair “mask” by mixing two tablespoons honey with one egg yolk and apply it evenly to clean, damp hair. After allowing it to set for about 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly and enjoy a gorgeous hair day! This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the fabulous ways honey comes in handy! What’s your favorite way to use honey?
